JULIA FLORENCE

“I create ceramics heavily influenced by my background in illustration and my love of life drawing, as well as feelings of empowerment around women’s bodies. Having only been making pots for a few years and being mostly self-taught, I find the medium challenging but rewarding in terms of its volatility and powerful presence that is created by large works. I love to play with the combination of a tactile, full-bodied surface with delicately drawn intertwined figures as well as more expressive, abstract brushwork. I throw my ceramics with local clay and take inspiration from my life drawings and the people around me. The thought and effort that goes into throwing pottery means I regard each raw piece as an artwork within its own right rather than as a mere canvas.”
