I make slab-built vessel forms which act as 3D canvasses to explore the infinite possibilities for mark making achieved with a clay surface and ceramic materials. I want my work to evoke a feeling of landscapes and places effected by time – either over short periods or eons - and to appreciate landscape not only as grand, open vistas but also as small scale, intimate spaces.
I was born in Scotland, studied ceramics at Harrow College and Fine Art at Portsmouth University, and am based in the Midlands. I spend precious time around the coastline of Devon and Cornwall; collecting and exploring ideas through sketchbooks has been an important part of my creative process since my student days. In sketchbooks I can push boundaries, be playful, record and investigate in an unpressured way and this helps in the continuous development of my work.
I work in ceramics and have a strong appreciation of other art forms and creative processes. I especially enjoy the work of artists like Cy Twombley, Antoni Tapies and Ben Nicholson. I exhibit my work at respected galleries across the UK and Europe and my work is held in many private collections.
